Michael Hurczyn, driver of the #71 Volkswagen GTI TCR and Brand & Partnerships Director for FCP Euro is no stranger to TC America. Hurczyn had a very successful season in 2019, winning the TCR Driver's Championship. we caught up with him for this week's Driver Download!

DEEP DIVE

How was the season opener at COTA?
It was great to stop planning and finally start racing.  I finished 4th both races, but the cars finished both races with no mechanical issues and no contact, so that’s a plus.  

How did you get into racing?
I grew up going to Lime Rock every Memorial Day weekend, dad instructed for BMW Club drivers schools. I was exposed to it at a young age and never stopped dreaming about it.  

What is your favorite racing memory?
Winning the 2019 TCR Championship and being part of such a great team.

What’s the story behind your helmet design?
I haven’t had my helmet painted and just added a few stickers. I will do it at some point, but I was doing so well with it as is, I didn’t want to distract focus from the main prize of winning the championship.

Something interesting about you or a talent?
I was a goalkeeper in soccer for over 25 years and played professionally for a season.

If you could invite 3 people to dinner who would it be and why?
I have two uncles from Poland on my mothers side that tragically passed away too early.  I looked up to them both and would love to get there their perspective on my adult life.  I’d also invite Robin Williams to keep us laughing.

What makes racing in TC America make sense for FCP Euro?
FCP Euro sells European car parts online. We sell for Audi, BMW, Volkswagen, Porsche, Mercedes, for all the major makes. We’re growing really quickly.

The racing effort for us is a branding exercise where we go out and prove to the world that we’re not just an e-commerce player, we also have some really smart and dedicated people. We want to use it as a level of attraction to let people know that we exist and also to add some credibility and stature. You can buy parts anywhere online so why would people want to buy from FCP Euro?

We go out there and put a face to a name, shake a lot of hands, and get enthusiasts involved by inviting them to races, giving away tickets, and we also have a documentary series called The Paddock that’s up on Amazon and YouTube that follows the racing series. It’s a big branding exposure exercise for us and so far it’s worked really well.
