Schwartz Opens VIR Weekend with Quickest Practice 1 Time
Joint TC championship leader Johan Schwartz got his weekend off to a strong start by pacing the opening practice session at Virginia International Raceway presented by Henry Repeating Arms.
The Danish driver guided the #80 Rooster Hall Racing BMW M235iR to the top of the timing charts early on and proceeded to steadily shave off the tenths over the course of the 35-minute session.
Schwartz’s best time of 2:02.066 around the 17-turn, 3.27-mile road course was just over a tenth shy of his pole position effort from qualifying at the same venue 12 months ago.
His teammate Steve Streimer, who won race 2 at VIR last year, was on course to finish second and form a Rooster Hall 1-2 but was eclipsed right at the end of the session by Toby Grahovec in the #26 Classic BMW M240iR.
Grahovec came up just 0.014 seconds short of Schwartz while Streimer came through 0.440 seconds off the outright pace, marginally ahead of fellow Rooster Hall BMW driver Richard Zulman.
Robert Nimkoff rounded out the top five with a time of 2:02.682 in the #20 AutoTechnic Racing M235iR, while Joseph Federl ran sixth-quickest in the #23 TechSport Racing Nissan 370z.
Joint points leader Jeff Ricca set the tenth-best time in his #78 GenRacer Hyundai Genesis Coupe.
The TC America TC-class field will regroup later today at 2:20 p.m. EDT for a second 35-minute session, in preparation for qualifying on Saturday.
