Watkins Glen, New York - The TC America powered by Skip Barber series hits the halfway point in the championship with a stop at the world famous Watkins Glen International raceway with a strong 31-car field. This professional touring car racing series comprises three classes (TCX, TC and TCA), with one driver racing in two 40-minute races each weekend behind the wheel of factory-built, turn-key racecars.
TCX
With the entire TCX field competing in identical BMW M2 CS Cup cars, this is truly a driver's talent showcase with amazingly close comptition.
2021 TCX champion Jacob Ruud (#1 Fast Track Racing BMW) will be the racer to beat at the Glen. Ruud has score four wins so far this season. Ruud may have extra fans in attendance as he just graduated from the nearby Rochester Institute of Technology.
While no one was going to deny Ruud his college degree, multiple racers would like to beat him to the 2022 TCX championship. His strongest competitors so far have been Colin Garrett, Stephen Cugliari, Lucas Catania, and Steve Streimer.
Colin Garrett (#44 Rooster Hall Racing BMW) is currently second in points with two wins, a second, and a third. Stephen Culigari (#57 Accelerating Performance BMW) sits third in points with three runner-up positions. No doubt Stephen would like Watkins Glen to be the site of his first win of the year.
Likewise, Lucas Catania (#26 Rigid Speed BMW) with a second, and four third-place finishes will be looking to make it to the top spot in New York. Steve Streimer (#30 HARD Motorsport BMW) is also seeking his first podium finish of 2022 having finished fourth three-times so far this year.
The top five drivers have two things in common. They all have a great BMW to race, and each has scored points in all six of the first races.
TC
In TC action, Kevin Boehm (#9 CrowdStrike Racing by Skip Barber Honda Civic Type-R) has prevailed five of six times over a deep field of talent. Boehm leads with 140 points.
Second in the drivers standings is Mat Pombo (#37 LA Honda World Racing Honda Civic Type-R) with 85 points and three podium finishes. Pombo has raced a wide range of cars at Watkins Glen and will no doubt be looking for a win.
Jeff Ricca (#78 Genracer/Ricca Autosport Hyundai Veloster N) has been the strongest Hyundai challenge to the Honda’s so far this season. Ricca has finished a close in the past three races. Will Watkins Glen be his breakthrough? Ricca has 74 points.
Scoring a popular win at NOLA in Race 2, Clay Williams (#60 MINI JCW Team), sits fourth in points with 73. This is despite two DNFs. The NOLA win was also the first TC class win for MINI.
Looking to improve on his first-ever podium appearance at NOLA will be Mathew Ibrahim (#06 DRS & Garagistic BMW M240iR).
TCA
In TCA it’s been a battle between Honda and Subaru for the race wins, but don't count out the Minis.
Carter Fartuch (#16 Skip Barber Racing School Honda Civic Si) and Gresham Wagner (#21 TechSport Subaru BRZ) have each scored three race wins, but with a 100% finishing record, Fartuch has the points lead 123-94.
Among the rivals looking to break up the Fartuch/Wagner party at Watkins Glen are Devin Anderson (#22 TechSport Racing Subaru BRZ) and Spencer Bucknum (#5 LA Honda World Racing Honda Civic Si). Anderson has 84 points with 79 for Bucknum.
Anderson has been the runner-up the past four races in a row, including twice behind his TechSport teammate. Bucknum has scored a trio of third-place finishes. Either one could break through this coming week.
Mini racers Christian Perocarpi and PJ Groenke are seeking that top step for the Mini JCW Team.
In the team standings, it’s currently a tie with the Skip Barber Racing School and TechSport each having 129 points.
Watkins Glen International is known among race fans everywhere, having earned it’s reputation in the early days of road racing, and having hosted the United States Grand Prix for many years. It’s a fan-friendly place to watch great racing.
