Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin - TC America powered by Skip Barber kicked off its fifth event of the 2022 season under a cloudy sky at Road America. The mythical 4.048 miles Elkhart Lake track presents many challenges with its 14-turn layout, but it’s nothing the TC America drivers can’t face.
Drivers swapped positions during Friday morning’s practice session, proving many of them are podium contenders.
TCX
The TCX field, composed only of BMW M2 CS Cup cars, showed strong pace in the first practice session. Championship leader Jacob Ruub of Fast Track Racing set a flying lap of 2:26.434, 0.586 faster than Lucas Catania in his #26 Rigid Speed BMW. While Ruud was the only driver able to clock in a time in the 2:26s, Catania was the only one in the 2:27s. The #44 Rooster Hall Racing of Colin Garrett rounded off the Top 3 with a time of 2:28.132. Michael Kanisczack, subbing for Jessica Tracy in the #97 Random Vandals Racing, set the fourth fastest lap time.
TC
Jeff Ricca was the strongest Hyundai Veloster N in the TC field, setting an impressive time of 2:28.439 in his #78 Genracer / Ricca Autosport machine. Not only was he the fastest TC driver on the track, he also finished in the Top 5 overall. His teammate Nicholas Barbato finished second in class in the #88 Genracer / Ricca Autosport sister car. Coming in strong from a Top 2 finish at Watkins Glen, Barbato is looking at stepping up to the top of the podium this weekend. Championship leader Kevin Boehm, in his #9 CrowdStrike Racing by Skip Barber Racing Honda Civic Type-R, set the third fastest lap time of the session. Boehm has dominated the field this season, winning 6 rounds thus far.
TCA
Four-time race winner Gresham Wagner, in his #21 TechSport Racing Subaru BRZ, was the quickest in the TCA field, almost three seconds ahead of Canadian driver PJ Groenke commanding the #62 MINI JCW Team MINI JCW machine. Devin Anderson rounded off the Top 3 in his #22 Techsport Subaru BRZ, leaving championship leader Carter Fartuch in his #16 Skip Barber Racing School Honda Civic Si in fourth.
