Champions' Quest with Michael Hurczyn

22 August 2019 TCR

5 Questions: Michael Hurczyn

Three victories and four second place finishes have complimented what’s been a stellar 2019 TC America season for TCR points leader, Michael Hurczyn. The Golf GTI TCR driver tops the standings with a 44-point advantage over his FCP Euro Motorsports teammate, Nate Vincent.

We caught up with Hurczyn ahead of Rounds 11 and 12 at Watkins Glen International.

1.) What would you say has been the highlight of your season thus far?

My first professional race win at St Petersburg because my wife, kids, and parents were there to share in the joy.

2.) Looking at the calendar, Watkins Glen is the closest track to home for you. Have you spent a lot of time at the circuit? What are some things you like best about it?

I did my first track day at Watkins Glen in 2002, and I probably have the second most laps here outside of Lime Rock.  It is such a fantastic track. It’s a momentum track and all of the corners are so fast.

3.) Next in line with you in the points run is your own FCP Euro Motorsports teammate. How's the inner team competition between you and Nate?

It’s an interesting dynamic for sure, but we are friends first, competitors second.  The team pokes fun at us because we bicker like an old married couple sometimes. I’m really glad to have him as my teammate and excited to share our successes together.

4.) Knowing that you're leading the championship beyond the halfway point, is there a different approach or mentality that you take into the race weekends?

I don’t think so.  The mentality is always to drive fast and take (calculated) chances.  There have been several competitors nipping at our heels this season, but we have a great team that ensures the cars are always good to go and qualifying close to the front has helped us stay out of trouble.

5.) Of the three remaining events, which one are you most looking forward to and why?

Watkins Glen. It’s a track I know well, and I will have my whole family and in-laws there to cheer us on.  We also have a few dozen fellow FCP Euro employees coming to camp for the weekend. Nate and I will do our best to put on a good show!
