James Walker, Jr. returns to the track this weekend in the No. 34 Risi Competizione/Hella Pagid Brake Systems Alfa Romeo Giulietta TCR at VIRginia International Raceway for Rounds 5 and 6 of the 2019 SRO Motorsports America TC America Series.
Walker heads to the 17-turn, 3.27-mile Alton, Virginia circuit with a brand-new, beautiful Alfa Romeo Giulietta TCR, Chassis No. 17, after an accident in St. Petersburg, Florida caused extensive damage to Chassis No. 16 and left Walker with a broken collarbone. The Risi Competizione team received the new car just over two weeks ago and went to work preparing it for this weekend's doubleheader race event.
"I'm happy to report the doctor signed off on my ability to compete on Wednesday, and all of the miscellaneous aches, pains, and bruises cleared up weeks ago," said Walker of The Woodlands, Texas. "And I finally got some cool pictures of the new titanium hardware installed in my body! While the good news is that the healing is going to plan, the bad news is that my center of gravity is a little bit higher as a result."
"The Risi Competizione crew has been busy getting the new car, originally planned to be part of their stable but now reallocated to my effort, prepared for our race at VIR. It's fortunate they had the new chassis en route, as we aren't totally sure what we are going to do with the crashed chassis yet. A few weeks ago, the decision was made to ceremoniously roll Chassis No. 16 into a corner of the Risi garage and resume this season with the new car. We will sort out what to do with Chassis No. 16 once things settle down and we are farther along with the season."
Walker made his professional racing debut in March at the Circuit of the Americas with two fourth places finishes in rounds 1 and 2 of the SRO Motorsports America championship series, as well as being awarded the "Quick Shyfter Award" for setting the fastest lap of the race in Race 2 on Sunday. He went on to collect his first podium, finishing second, in Round 3 at St. Pete and suffered the accident in Sunday's Round 4 shortly after setting the fastest TCR race lap to that point in the contest.
The VIR weekend schedule includes two practice sessions on Friday. Saturday features qualifying in the morning for 15 minutes and the first 40-minute race from 3:55-4:35 p.m. The second 40-minute race will run on Sunday from 3:15-3:55 p.m. All times are Eastern.
All races are streamed live on TCAmerica.us, with race highlights on CBS Sports Network.
